Lichtenberg wood burning, also known as creating Lichtenberg figures is the art of burning tree like or lightning like pattern into wood using high voltage electricity, which is generated by a transformer, usually a neon sign transformer (NST) or a microwave oven transformer (MOT) or an oil burner transformer (OBT).The types of wood and grain patterns affect the shape of the Lichtenberg figure produced. Fractal wood burner burning is a process of applying an electrically conductive solution on wood through a transformer using two probes or two car battery alligator clips.
Neon Sign Transformers for Lichtenberg wood burning machine are usually between 9000 and 15000 volts, but the most common ones are around 10000 volts. The neon power supply has much lower amperage than the MOT, usually around 30mA.The Lichtenberg figure created by neon sign transformer shows more details and is more interesting, but burns slowly, shallowly and narrowly compared to MOT.
